The Living Quietness

The whole world is your home. I am the Mother of the wicked, I am the Mother of the virtuous. Whenever you are in distress, say that 'I have a Mother'. Sri Sarada Devi.

Encountering a miracle in my daily life through Thich Nhat Hanh's Teachings

"Enjoying our food"

Many times when we are eating our food, we are thinking of other things and we don't really know what it is we are eating. When we know what we are eatig, it can be so enjoyable. When you sit down to eat, look at you food and know what it is that you are picking yp to put into your mouth. If it is a carrot, see that it is a carrot that you are chewing and nothing else.

...

Then one day you wil see the sunshine, the rain cloud, and all the things and all the people that have come together to make the spaghetti and carrot in front of you.
When you put food in your mouth and chew it with this kind of awareness, you are chewing something wonderful.

From
"A pebble for your pocket" by Thich Nhat Hanh

As I cut Okra to make the lentil okra soup for lunch in my home,
I see the love that has gone to make the okra grow
As it is in my hands now and in the kitchen board.

Some one must have taken care for the sun to shine on it to grow
Some one must have taken care that enough water went to this okra plant so it could grow.
Someone must have cared to pick them carefully once it had grown.

The wonder of the sun itself shining on it as it grew
The wonder of the water that went to feed as it grew
The wonder of love that this okra is
Is our food for lunch today in our home.
